What Indeed is a Domain?
If you desire to have a website, this means that you require a domain. A domain name is an easy-to-remember name that you write in your web browser's address bar when you want to access a given web site.
Why Do You Require a Domain Name?
This is a topic I broach because of the fact that last week my boss proposed the idea of making a web site for our brand new project. That itself is not an issue, the issue is that he wants a site, but has not made up his mind yet about what it should look like, what it should contain, and so on. All that he mentioned to me was the name of the site - its domain. So, we now have an address for a yet-to-be-created site and nothing more.
Each web site is hosted on a physical server. That physical server has its own personal physical address, popular also as an IP address. Accessing a website by typing the IP of the server in your browser, though, is not the best and most appropriate thing to do, so that was how and why domains came into existence. Thus, a domain corresponds to an IP address on the Internet. After it has been registered, that is.
Registering a Domain
To register a cheap domain name, you first have to select a domain name registrar. NTChosting offers an optimal solution for my current and future projects - they provide a Domain Manager package, which can be easily upgraded to a web hosting plan at a later time - when my boss eventually decides what purpose the site will serve.
Hence, to register a domain, you need to select a name for your site. Next, you have to pick a TLD - this is what comes after the dot. For instance, in 'forbes.com', '.com' is the top-level domain name (TLD). Clearly, '.com' signifies 'company', '.net' signifies 'network', '.org' signifies 'organization', etc.
Once you've selected your domain and your future domain name registrar, you have to discover whether the domain name you want to register is free, since someone else might have registered it before you, no matter how annoying this might be. Each registrar company, including NTChosting, has a tool at their sign-up page, which checks the availability of a particular domain. To carry on with the registration of a domain name, you have to specify some domain registrant information - the personal name, the address, the mail address and the telephone number of the domain's owner.
You've Registered a Domain... Now What?
I registered .com, .net, .eu and .biz domains for our project, as per the desire of my still-uncertain-about-the-purpose-of-the-future-site boss. I tried out the domain management dashboard NTChosting is offering and found it very easy to use - everything is logically arranged and, from what I noticed in the web hosting CP demo at their site, once we upgrade to a dedicated web hosting plan, it will remain the same, just with a lot more features. This, thank goodness, will spare me quite a lot of discomfort from having to manage my domain and hosting user account separately. So, while waiting for the boss to make a decision about at least what the website should include, I was happy to find that the domain management tool includes DNS management and domain name renewal options, and - a very convenient feature (!) - a parked domain name template, which I resorted to in order to set up a "Coming Soon" page for our domain names.
Country-Specific Top-Level Domains
I was rather glad to discover that NTChosting is offering many country-specific top-level domain names, since the project the site is aimed for is international. Country-code TLDs are delegated to local registry operators, which allow domain registration companies to register cheap domain names, usually at rates that are cheaper than those offered to the end clients. There are a lot of country-code TLDs: .co.uk for the UK, .me for Montenegro, .de for Germany, .us for the USA, .ca for Canada, .com.au for Australia, and so on. This, I am convinced, will make my boss happy because we will be able to prepare a local version of the web site for each country where the project will be introduced.
